Still No Arrests for Murder of Shawn Hemmans

Shawn Hemmans

No arrests have been made in the murder of tour guide, Shawn Hemmans. The thirty-three-year-old King’s Park resident was viciously killed earlier this month at a house he frequented on Saint Thomas Street. Following the homicide, speculation ran amuck as to what motivated the crime which took place around seven-thirty that night. News Five’s Duane Moody visited the family today and found out that although they have laid Hemmans to rest, they are in fear of their lives due to unfounded claims that the murder was orchestrated by a gang.

It’s been nine days since thirty-three-year-old Shawn Hemmans was shot multiple times to the body on the night of February third, at a house on Saint Thomas Street in Belize City.  The tour guide was called out of the house and when he went downstairs, a gunman opened fire on him; he died while being prepped for surgery at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.  There has since been no arrest for the murder of Hemmans.

“The last time I saw the police man was when he came and spoke to me about…well he said they will conduct the autopsy. They had to stop the autopsy and they did it the following day. Other than that, no police man has come to us.”

Shawn was laid to rest over the weekend, on Saturday. But according to his older sister, Natalie, they have been unable to grieve peacefully, because there are several rumours going around as to what may have triggered the murder of her brother. She maintains, just as police has confirmed, that Shawn was not a part of any gang.

“The one story has so many rumours and me and my family, we are not problem people. We don’t go out there and look for trouble. They are calling names, they are saying it is this area, it is that area; it’s people from here, people from there. Even one spell, I am hearing our own relative. It’s just sad the way they killed him like our society. Oh he got this amount of shots, he was a bad man. No. The amount of shots does not define who Shawn was. They took his life unfairly.”

“We don’t have nothing in regards to Mister Hemmans. We know him to be a person that likes to socialise. He frequents many establishments, but a person that is involved in any illegal activities; no we have any records to say that.”

These claims by people on the street put the family at risk. The incident has also left the family, including the children traumatized.

“This hurts, it really hurts us. We are mourning, he’s gone; we can’t bring him back. We are leaving it in God’s hands. I just want everybody to know they took my brother. Let me say it like this. My eight-year-old baby comes home from school and all he does is stays on the ground in the room.  This is how traumatized we are. It’s wrong. It is completely wrong. So I just want them to know that we are not looking for any revenge. We don’t want any revenge. Each and every person has their day and God knows when your time is. Our hands are clean; we are not pointing any figures.”
