National Security’s Second Annual Ride to the Border

Elton Bennett

The second annual Ride to the Border, organized by the Ministry of National Security, was held in the Toledo District over the weekend.  While thirty-one cyclists from the Belize Defense Force, the coast guard and the police department participated in the sixty-seven mile ride, the purpose of the event is to increase the awareness of the public on the mission and tasks of the B.D.F.

Captain Elton Bennett, Vice Commandant, Belize Coast Guard

“Over the weekend we had a National Security Ride to the Border.  It’s an initiative by the Ministry of National Security where the security forces, the Belize Police Department, Belize Defense Force and the Coast Guard spearheaded an activity, and I say spearheaded because we really want for other personnel outside of the ministry to really get involved and so it’s really open for the general public.  The intent was to do a terrain tour by bike from Punta Gorda to the Jalacte border and back, seventy miles and interesting terrain.  We visited the Treetops Operating Base that belongs to the B.D.F., we received an operational brief.  So it’s both enjoying the natural environment of our southern borders but also receiving that operational brief which was very important for us.”

The spirit of the ride is also to build camaraderie amongst members of the security forces.
