Mayhem on Mayflower During Attempted Burglary of Williams Supermarket

Alejandro Cowo

There was an exchange of gunfire between officers responding to the scene of a burglary and thieves fleeing from the Mayflower Street area on Sunday night.  Residents report hearing a barrage of gunshots shortly after ten o’clock and when they peered out of their windows they saw a team of policemen giving chase to a pair of burglars who were in the process of helping themselves to items stolen from Williams Supermarket.  Assistant Superintendent Alejandro Cowo explains what took place during the foiled burglary.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City

“Based on that, police had responded to a burglary report just after ten p.m.  The building of Williams Supermarket was being burglarized and police responded to the scene and upon reaching, they observed several persons coming out of the building with several items and as a result police came to apprehend him and that is where they exchange of gunfire began between the suspects and the police which escalated in other shootings happening within the immediate area.  After the scene was processed and police were looking for this person who police were suspecting to be involved.”

“Has that person been detained?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“There are several persons that were detained last night.”

“Now you all have a fixed checkpoint on both ends of that location, one at the Banak Street junction and the other at the Mayflower junction.  Explain to me how is it that such lawlessness was able to transpire in such a heavily policed area.”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“We know yes, that there are police booths in those two vicinities, however, one way or the other, they managed to break into the back of the building and get access to the building.”

“Are you able to say how they breached the building, did they go through a door or did they go through the wall?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“It’s through a window to the back of the building where police found several items that they utilized to get access to the building.”
