Gillnets Task Force on a Information Gathering Mission

The Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, and Sustainable Development is now accepting submissions from the public relating to the use of gillnets in Belize. The conservation society has called for a ban on the use of gillnets, noting that there are more disadvantages than benefits. According to the Ministry, the purpose of conducting this information is to obtain wide stakeholder input pertaining to current gillnet usage. The data will be collected by the Gillnet Task Force and reviewed as members consider the socio-economic and environmental impacts. Fisheries Administrator Beverly Wade says the findings will be relayed to stakeholders through consultations once analyses have been completed.

“The task force is really there to gather all the information from multi stakeholders, whether you are from the conservation community, whether you are an ordinary citizen, whether you are a fisherman to now send in information to that Task Force where the information will now be considered while looking at the objectives that Cabinet has given the task force to come back with them with a recommendation on the use of gill nets in Belize.”

“Are you able to speak on the collaboration with this work?”

Beverly Wade

“The task force is a multi-stakeholders task force that is made up of non-governmental organizations, government organizations and fishers themselves. Also interest groups, like I know the Game Fish Association also sits on that task force. So it is made up of users of the recourse in general and it is made of the N.G.O.s and of course of government organizations.”
