Fisheries Administrator Says More Enforcement Needed to Save Nassau Grouper

Beverly Wade

Fisheries Administrator Beverly Wade also commented on the status of the Nassau grouper. Earlier in the week, the Wildlife Conservation Society highlighted a report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature which lists the Nassau grouper as critically endangered. According to the WCS, enforcement on regulations is needed in order to address the problem. Fisheries Administrator agrees.

Beverly Wade, Fisheries Administrator

“There are some areas that we think we could strengthen in Belize to further bring protection to the Nassau grouper. Belize is one of the countries that has done probably the most in terms of conservation and protection of Nassau groupers. There are still fisheries for Nassau groupers in countries like the Bahamas. So one of the things that we are highlighting and it is one of our Achilles heels in Belize is the issue of enforcement and the fact that our resources especially at the spawning aggregation sites which are normally offshore areas there is still very vulnerable to the pillaging from illegal fishing primarily from our neighbors. So it is signal that we should try and bring more attention to it and get the resources to allow us to enforce those areas. One of the biggest things is that a lot of the illegal fishing occurs at night. We are simply not equip to do night enforcement all the time. It is an area that hopefully government of Belize along with partners will be able to try and strengthen in order we can address that.”
