Charges for Driver who Knocked Down Marilena Mortis Still Pending

Marilena Mortis

Primary school teacher Marilena Mortis was knocked down and killed on Monday morning, as she attempted to cross the busy Phillip Goldson Highway near DK Supermarket. The mother of two had just left her mother’s house on Dolphin Drive in Buttonwood Bay and had hopped over a barrier to get across the other side of the highway since there are no nearby pedestrian crossings.  In the wake of the unfortunate incident, the driver of the vehicle that fatally struck the twenty-three-year-old woman was served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution.  The police department, however, is awaiting instruction from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in order to proceed with the case.  This morning, ASP Alejandro Cowo reiterated safety concerns involving pedestrians who risk their lives while crossing the busy thoroughfare.

“I know that the driver was served with an N.I.P.  The file was put together and we were waiting on the results of the post mortem and we are just waiting for directives and then we will decide how to move on from there and.”

“Is there still any concern that despite this fatal accident that people are still jumping the barriers?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“It is a concern because the loss of life means a lot and despite of that, people seem not to be paying attention or seeing the risk that they are going through whenever they are jumping these barriers or even the dividers by where the accidents happen and the one by Pallotti High School.  Every day in the mornings, we keep seeing students, parents, adults trying to get to the other side of the highway which is much faster for them, but not knowing the risk that is coming behind it.”
