Agriculture C.E.O. Says Farms Must Produce Quality, Consistency

Jose Alpuche

On Wednesday, C.E.O. in the Ministry of Agriculture, Jose Alpuche, told News Five the ministry is attempting a new approach to assist farmers. Alpuche says they are finding ways to educate the farmers in San Carlos and teach them methods on how to effectively operate in the local market.

Jose Alpuche, C.E.O., Ministry of Agriculture

“It is not as if it is something that we caused. We’ve consulted with them, directly consulted with them. A couple weeks ago, I led a delegation to El Salvador including farmers from San Carlos or a farmer rep from San Carlos, specifically to look at marketing issues in a very successful program that they have in El Salvador. We are trying to expose them as how to operate within the market place and that is what we are doing. Like I said, I am little bit surprised by the grand standing yesterday because was what it was. They will have or they already have a market that is closed off to imports.”

“Is the contraband of these potatoes from neighbouring Mexico is also a concern for the Ministry because that too is taking place?”

Jose Alpuche

“That is a huge concern always and quite frankly the short, medium and long term solution to that is to produce the quality, produce the consistency of supply, and to produce it at a competitive price. That is the goal that we have. But as it relates to suggestions being made yesterday that we should put technicians to do the work of customs and other agencies is ridiculous to say the least. We have fifty-four technicians in the entire country to service a few thousands farmers. We don’t have time to be policing the border.”
