U.D.P. Leadership Convention Set for February 2020

On January twenty-sixth, the United Democratic Party’s National Party Council decided that its leadership convention will be held in February 2020. Up to date, there are only two known candidates who have made their political aspirations public. There is Deputy Party Leader Patrick Faber as well as John Saldivar, the area representative for Belmopan and Minister of National Security. Recently, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington told News Five that the position of leadership is not reserved for any special person and that he won’t rule out the possibility of contesting the leadership position. We asked Minister Faber about it today.

Patrick Faber, Deputy Leader, U.D.P.

“It was decided that we will hold the leadership convention for our party in February of next year. I think that should be new to you. And so that campaign continues. Another thing that came up of that meeting is that both of us made the pledge to the National Party Council that whoever wins the convention one will support the other one. We are not about breaking up the party. I think that was a concern that it is rumored that some had.”

“The deadline for candidates to submit applications, has that…?”

Patrick Faber

“All of these things are spelled out in our party rules but I don’t know right off and its quite a distance off. Are you thinking about putting in an application?”

Hipolito Novelo

“I am thinking about what Minister Wilfred Elrington said. He doesn’t rule out the possibility that he might run and lead the party. What do you think about that?”

Patrick Faber

“Everything is possible on politics. I have been long enough to know that. I think Mr. Elrington, don’t take me wrongly, I think he has all the characteristic, the seniority and the knowledge, ability to lead the party so I don’t take that away from him at all. But clearly over the years he has never expressed that kind of interest. I think if he comes in at this point I think he is a bit behind especially in solidifying the support of colleagues both those who are elected and those who are looking to be elected and he maybe the underdog. But hey, you don’t count out the underdog. This is the beauty about the U.D.P. We are democratic. Nothing is written in stone. Everybody has a chance. No matter how senior or junior you are, you are free to aspire and put yourself forward and ultimately the people of our party on who they want in their leadership position.”
