Why Was Former Mexican President Vicente Fox in Belize?

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox was in the country last week. He was not on official business for the Mexican government, but held a brief meeting with Prime Minister Dean Barrow and was joined by Mexican businessmen and potential investors. Now, in 2018, Fox was appointed to the Board of Directors of Khiron Life Sciences Corporation, a Canadian integrated medical cannabis company with its core operations in Colombia. According to online articles, Fox will be a strategic advisor and brand ambassador for the company, furthering the company’s education and brand leadership interests across Latin America.  We asked Faber about it.

“I wasn’t privy to any conversation with either Mr. Fox or the Prime minister to say what they might have discussed. But I do know as a member of the Cabinet subcommittee on Investment that in fact we have been long maybe two or three years now ‘okayed’ from the Cabinet level, the cabinet subcommittee on investment to explore the possibilities of engaging with companies who want to grow industrial hemp in Belize. Of course to do that we require legislation and I think that was the big hold up on the part of the cabinet subcommittee. We were waiting on that legislation. The Attorney General has gone on record and he has come to Cabinet to say that he is working on such legislation.  I will tell you that there are quite a number of requests. I don’t know that any of them are necessarily connected with former president Fox but there are a number of request pouring in, more than five is that I was told about proposal having to do with industrial hemp. Belizeans can be assured that like with all other investments or proposals that are brought to the Cabinet subcommittee on investment that we will do our due diligence to ensure that we explore those possibilities for the betterment of Belize.”
