Assad Shoman: Belize Inherited the Borders, but not the 1859 Treaty

Among the myriad of answers that Shoman provided was in respect to a question on the 1859 treaty, which is at the core of the territorial claim by Guatemala. Shoman claims Belize did not inherit the 1859 treaty from the UK. But he added that Belize inherited the boundaries of the 1859 treaty.  Here is how he nuanced the issue.

“I said we didn’t inherit the treaty, yo know, because some people say…in fact some of the NO-proponents in our presence when we were around with the UB students, they say we should pay compensation to Guatemala for article seven that the British didn’t do—some of the same NO people. And I’m saying no, we did not inherit the 1859 Treaty; we inherited the borders established by that treaty.”
