90 year-old Woman Tied and Gagged in Corozal Home Invasion

Two persons remain in police custody tonight in Corozal; they were caught shortly after a brazen broad daylight home invasion in the Santa Rita community of Corozal Town. The men are believed to be part of a trio who targeted the home of well-known butcher, Javier Gonzalez. As Gonzalez got home from work at the market with an employee, they were accosted by three men who carried a firearm and a baseball bat. But by that time, the burglars had already tied and gagged Gonzalez’s ninety-year-old mother-in-law and had her in one of the backrooms. They then proceeded to rob the business owner of the proceeds from his meat shop and his gun. As the thieves continued to thrash the house, the employee would engage in a scuffle with one of the men, after which he was grazed to the head with a bullet. News Five found out today that it isn’t the first time that Gonzalez has been targeted and Wednesday’s incident has left them shaken up.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Corozal police were called to the home of one Javier Gonzalez in the Santa Rita layout area some time shortly before two p.m. Upon arrival Mr. Gonzalez reported to them that he arrived at his home sometime after one-twenty p.m., accompanied by one of his employees. And while he was in the process of unloading some goods into a warehouse that he has there, himself and his employee were accosted by three male persons, one of whom was armed with what appears to be a firearm whist one was armed with a baseball bat. They were robbed of their personal belongings before those persons made good their escape. We also learnt during the investigation that prior to Mr. Gonzalez’s arrival at his home, those persons had already entered the house and had tied up his wife. Police response to the area resulted in the detention of one person and the recovery of several items believed to have been from the burglary. So police investigation into this matter continues whilst we are seeking two other suspects in connection with the investigation.”

“Sir, information to us is that the assailants fled after a scuffle in which the employee fought back against one of them and in the process he was also shot in the head—a shot which grazed him. Could you confirm?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yes that is the case. Mr. Gonzalez was relieved of his licensed nine millmetre pistol and that is the same weapon that was used during the struggle where his employee was grazed.”
