6.6 Earthquake Shakes Southern Mexico; Tremors Felt in Belize

A strong earthquake hit southern Mexico this morning. Fortunately, there is no reported loss of life or major injuries and infrastructural damage. The quake scared people, some evacuated their homes and others recorded swaying buildings. Mexican media is reporting that at least one school received minor damage as the tremors rocked across the southern state. The tremors were felt in Mexico City, Guatemala and El Salvador.  According to a few residents in Belize City, they felt the tremors early this morning. The U.S. Geological Survey puts the earthquake at a magnitude of six point six. It was centred about ten miles from the city of Tapachula in the Chiapas state and struck at a depth of forty miles. Back in 2017, the same region experienced an eight point one earthquake that killed nearly one hundred people and damaged thousands of buildings.  That same month another earthquake in central Mexico left more than four hundred dead.
