Is Wilfred Elrington the Future of the U.D.P.?

Wilfred Elrington

Could Wilfred Elrington be the future of the U.D.P. after Dean Barrow’s departure? Up to date, Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber and Minister of National Security, John Saldivar, are the two candidates who have openly expressed their desire to lead the U.D.P.  There had been rumors of a dark horse and many believe that the third candidate might come in the person of Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte. Elrington, however, isn’t ruling out anything. When asked about the possibility of running for the U.D.P. leadership, Minister Elrington said all things are possible.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“The position of leadership is not reserve for any special person and the inducement to run would have nothing to do with whether people are contended with Patrick or John. All of us are entitled to throw our hats in the ring if in fact we think that is the right and proper thing to do. Certainly if we believe that that is the thing that our constituency would to see us do and would provide their support for it. In the interest of the well being of Belize I rule out nothing. I won’t go any further than that. I will simply say that in the interest of the well being of this country and especially given the tremendous weakness and division that is evident in the People’s United Party, I don’t want to rule out anything. I was very, very pleased to see that the last president of Malaysia put his hat in the ring at the age of ninety-two and won. I am only seventy and I expect to live long after ninety-two so all things are possible.”
