C.E.O. Ramon Figueroa: “Lack of Training is Not the Cause; it is a Lack of Care!”

Ramon Figueroa

While that nurse is yet to find out what consequences she will face, the fact is that a baby died at the Corozal Community Hospital. C.E.O. Figueroa says that it is unacceptable. He states that what happened is not as a result of a lack of training – it simply comes down to lack of care about the work they do and the people they serve. He says that although these workers are trained, the ministry and its partners are still taking steps to ensure that they are aware of their duties and responsibilities.

Dr. Ramon Figueroa, C.E.O., Ministry of Health

“We have organized training for pediatric emergency management in Corozal district and it will be supported by people who have trained at KHMH. We are going to do that training there. Subsequent to that, we had a meeting with Director of Health Services, Regional Managers, Medical Council, Nursing Council, and Medical Associations because, to be frank with you, it is not one individual. I refuse to blame one single individual. At the end of the day it boils down to “we don’t care anymore.” I am sorry to say this about our colleagues, but not only nurses, physicians, but front line personnel. Sometimes if we would care a little bit more about how we care about people, these things wouldn’t happen. It is not because we don’t have the knowledge. I don’t think we don’t have the knowledge. In this day and age when you have a child die of diarrhoea and vomiting, to me, in my mind, it is unacceptable.”

Kudos to CEO Dr. Ramon Figueroa, for his courage and honesty. Yes it’s a tragedy that a child should go to the other side needlessly, but thank God we have people in the Ministry that are not afraid to look issues straight in the eye and call a spade a spade. I believe because of gutsy truthful speaking people like CEO Dr. Figueroa these types of these types of tragedies s will soon be behind us.
