Toledo Alcaldes Association Discusses I.C.J. Referendum

A recent telephone survey is pointing to an increasing number of persons who are against taking the claim to the I.C.J. for final resolution. Cabinet today endorsed a YES vote, while the Opposition party is to take a formal position soon. On Monday, a new N.G.O. was formed to push for a YES vote. Now, in southern Belize, large groups such as the Toledo Alcalde Association have been holding forums on the matter. Over the weekend the association heard attorney Audrey Matura speak on the topic. Spokesperson Cristina Coc told News Five that the association’s members need to be informed in order to make an educated decision.

“In this case where are being asked to either yes to taking the border dispute to the International Court of Justice or whether or not we feel we should not take the matter to the International Court of Justice. She emphasized the need to make a conscious decision and an independent decision and not be swayed one way or the other. It is very important for the Mayan people to be aware of the various implications and assertions that are being made because it primarily comes down to our land in southern Belize. Perhaps one of the greatest concerns for the Maya communities is how in fact our now affirmed rights to our lands and resources, how in fact that is being weighed into the discussion in terms of how we assert those rights regards to the sovereignty of this nation state.”
