Lazio scores victory over league leader Yabra

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re riding aboard this latest flight of Sports Monday. Two teams streaking in opposite directions met yesterday to kick off the second round of the Regent’s Cup Tournament at the M.C.C. Grounds. In the role of host, undefeated and league leading Kulture Yabra took the field against Lazio F.C. of Orange Walk, one of the cellar dwellers in the league.

And before you could holler bingo! Mexican Arturo Lance plough through the city teams defence to let loose a left foot that gives Lazio F.C. and eight minute 1 goal lead.

It’s a stunned Yabra team that looks to Norman “Tilliman” Nunez to produce the equaliser, but this play certainly won’t do it. Nunez continues to look for the equaliser and his seventh season goal by going to the set piece, but again comes up empty.

Finally, the anxious Yabra team gets a wide open breakaway only to feel let down when Deon Flowers squanders a one on one situation. A few moments later, Flowers heads to Landi Pinelo who has pace, but lacks direction, with his bid at leveller.

Of course, Christopher Hendricks has plans of his own as he tries to impose a 2-zip lead, but fails. It’s Hendricks again insisting on extending the Lazio 1-nil lead, but what was he thinking on this shot is anybody’s guess.

At the other end Nunez sets table for Deon Flowers who again butchers the scoring opportunity and at the half, Lazio remains with the 1 goal lead.

Immediately into second half, Norman Nunez tries to take matters into his own hands, but there’s no goal at the finish. When the goal does come, it comes off this nice run by Hendricks, who finished with a perfect slice and it gives Lazio a commanding 2-zip lead.

Fear begins to set in on the defending champion as Erwin Flowers centres in desperation and indeed Roberto Muschamp should have done better with the breakings.

Meanwhile, can you believe Lazio cold have made it 3-zip here? Only Hendricks can’t catch up with the pill. Mercifully, for the Yabra fans at least, the goal does come Norman Nunez somehow finds Landi Pinelo in heavy traffic and his left foot offering halves the deficit for the city team.

Gigante Perez then finds the head of Landi Pinelo in a bid for the equaliser, but the ball just skims off the crossbar. Downfield, this feeble pass from Vallan Simms to goalkeeper Shane Moody almost cost Yabra, but Shane recovers in time.

However, the knife in the heart of the Yabra team came when Deon Flowers smokes this grasshead burner to give Lazio the 3-1 victory. For the Yabra fans, it’s hard, but it’s fair. For the Lazio fans, they’re just relishing in their new role as spoilers.

In other Regent’s Cup play over the weekend, Builders Hardware Bandits vaulted to the top of the standings with a 1-zip scorcher over Jacintoville of Toledo. Griga United and Acros Real Verdes settled for a 1-1 stalemate. Juventus Stars exacted sweet revenge by dumping Acros Brown Bombers in a 4-1 blast, while Corozal F.C. clubbed San Pedro 3-1 in the rematch at Ricalde Stadium.

Meanwhile, here’s a reminder that the Belize Premier Football League convenes a general assembly on January twelfth at its headquarters on Regent Street. And we also want to remind you that Associacion Deportiva Carmelita de Costa Rica will be in town on January eighteenth to face Builder Hardware Bandits at Capital City. They will also face Kulture Yabra on the twentieth at the M.C.C. Grounds.
