DPM Faber Weighs in on Crime and Violence Under New ComPol
With Commissioner Chester Williams now at the helm of law enforcement, he inherits the never-ending challenge of fighting crime and violence. The complement of officers within the department is larger than it has ever been, owing to several recruitments during Whylie’s time as the top cop. But is there the political will on the part of government to continue providing the department with the necessary resources to effectively address crime and violence?
Isani Cayetano
“Notwithstanding his record and what he sets out to be his achievements during his tenure, there is still the prevalent issue of crime and violence. What is government doing at this point now that a new ComPol has been put in place to try to tackle this issue?”
Patrick Faber, Acting Prime Minister
“Well, I think new ComPol laid out his plans yesterday. I believe I saw that on the news. But again, the issues that are plaguing us in terms of crime are not issues for the police alone and until we fully embrace that, and you know what my position is as one of the ministers involved with a social portfolio I, we have to get back to some of the basics of how to fix our family issues. Until we do that, then I think the policing and all the other issues will continue to be Band-Aid effects. Now I don’t want anybody to misinterpret what I am saying, we absolutely need good and strong policing and it can certainly help us in terms of the fight against crime, but it cannot in isolation, be the fix it all for these situations.”
