Andrew Faber Sporting and Cultural Complex Coming Soon
Ground was broken this morning on Faber’s Road Extension for the building of a sporting and cultural complex in honor of late city councilor Andrew Faber. He was the younger sibling of Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber, who perished in a road traffic accident along with two others in 2011. During his time at City Hall, Faber was active in sports and recreation and ultimately made that corner of Collet Division his stomping ground. Today, residents in the neighborhood remembered him when they dedicated the soon to be built facility in his memory.
Patrick Faber, Minister of Sports
“You will know that a long time ago, we conceived this project and in fact it was the community that discussed and agreed that it would be named in honor of my younger brother which puts me in a little predicament sometimes because I am not into all promoting my own family and all of that. I try to stay away from that as much as is possible, but you will remember that Andrew Faber was a very, very avid sports person as well. In fact, he was a Belize City councilor up until the time of his death. I believed he held the portfolio of sports and he was a moving force in this constituency, in particular in this area, and so the community felt it was appropriate for it to be named after him. And, of course, I had no objection to that because I do believe that he is deserving of such a high honour indeed. We are also working to secure the renovation of the Raccoon Street field which is right by the police station and then we are also trying to work to secure monies to renovate the Berger Field that is on Vernon Street.”
