Update on Baby Nelson Tabora: Hospitalized and Stable

One week ago we aired the story of baby Nelson Tabora reportedly suffering from a condition called hydrocephalus. It is a condition where the head grows abnormally because the cerebrospinal fluid isn’t draining from the brain. Since his mother spoke of his condition and their story has been widely shared across Facebook, there has been an outpouring of support for the Bella Vista toddler. The baby has been admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is receiving medical treatment. Doctors have offered their services for free to replace the shunt in the baby’s head. The twenty-three-month-old has since done a number of scans, tests and blood transfusions. We have learnt that while he is stable and responding to treatment, his overall health is poor.  Doctors are now working to build the Baby Nelson’s health so that he can get all the medical procedures he needs. Since he was admitted, we were told that the toddler’s condition may be even more serious than reported by the parents and that he has a more rare birth defect called hydro-anencephaly. It is a condition in which the brain’s cerebral hemispheres are absent to varying degrees and the remaining cranial cavity is filled with cerebrospinal fluid. There is no cure for this and the prognosis is said to be grim. We’ll try to get an update on his condition in the coming days.
