Mapp Caye Murder Victim is 31-year-old Edinio Enso Humes

Edinio Enso Humes

One man is dead and two others are missing, but what happened on Mapp Caye days ago is still being pieced together. Up until Monday night, all we knew was that one man was murdered and two had disappeared without a trace. Family members of one of the missing men, identified as forty-eight-year-old diver Evan Neal, became concerned that he hadn’t returned home since January eleventh. Tonight, there are new details of the men. First, the murdered watchman is Edinio Enso Humes, a thirty-one-year-old man originally from Caledonia Village in the north, whose decomposed body was discovered on the island. Neal and Anthony Reneau of Belize City remain missing.  The father of Humes told us today that his son had only been working on Mapp Caye for a little over a week before he was murdered. On January seventh, Edinio took up work with Evan Neal, the owner of the Caye and five days later, he was shot to the head and dumped in a latrine on the small fishing camp.  Hours ago, his father found out his son was dead. The sixty-year-old man denies his son’s involvement in the drug trade. He says it was the first time his son had gone out to the island and he had never gotten mixed up in criminal activities before.

Andrea Polanco

Edito Humes

“Yes that is the last date I talked with him. Me and he gone dah Belize City together and he tell me ‘papi, I gwein dah caye and I tell him, “ok, then son, take care.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, he was happy to go for that job?”

Andrea Polanco

“Can you even begin to think or imagine what happened out there? Why was your son killed?”

Edito Humes

“Well, I don’t know exactly because I know that my boss man he nuh deal with no kind of drug or drug dealing things like that.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, you don’t think it is drug related?”

Edito Humes

“No. Because if I mi know that I have a relationship with a friend that is doing those things, he wouldn’t be my friend. I know that I can’t think weh di go on because I know that my boss man nuh di deal with no drug thing. That is why right now my mind is confused.”

Information to News Five suggests that this latest incident on Mapp Caye could have resulted from drug wars in the area, but may have had nothing to do with the Humes, Neal and Reneau. Sources say that at the end of last year, sometime after Christmas, there was a drug deal that went bad on a neighboring caye and attempts were made to kill those involved without success. Those men who reportedly escaped that attack allegedly sought refuge on Mapp Caye at the time of the incident. It is now believed that some of the persons who were involved in that may have come back scouring the area and Humes became a casualty.
