The Search Continues for Missing Men

Edinio Humes & Evan Neal

And so the search is ongoing for Evan Neal and Anthony Reneau. This evening we spoke with Operations Officer of the Belize Coast Guard Lieutenant Roque Canul who says that today’s search didn’t turn up a shred of evidence that would point to the men’s whereabouts. Canul says they have been talking to fishermen and others in the general vicinity of Mapp Caye but so far everyone claims not to have seen or heard anything.  He says they will continue to search for three to four more days.

“Since then we have been searching for Mr. Evan Neal and another person who is Mr. Anthony Reneau. We searched the entire area, the entire Mapp Caye area and surrounding areas but up to now we have not had any success and the search continues because it is not only two persons missing, but apparently there are two skiffs and two weapons that are missing. And so that is the search the Coast Guard is doing at this point in time.  So far we have not found anything. It seems from the condition of the body that the incident happened a couple days ago because the body was already in a state of decomposition and that puts us in a situation where based on the time, the search area is now a huge one. But what we are doing is that we are combing the surrounding areas and as information comes in then we go to the areas that we are informed about whereby these people might be or where they might have gone. I don’t want to say that the chances will decrease – it is giving a negative approach to the whole situation. We are just hoping that these persons are found in good condition. We will just do what we need to do to continue the search.  We will be doing at least another four days search. I have not received any information on the outcome of the post-mortem but from our side we will do our best to continue searching for at least another three or four days to see if we can turn up on anything.”

Canul told us today that is highly unlikely that the men got lost at sea and drifted away– as the waters were calm and there was clear visibility – with the caye being just about twenty minutes away from Belize City.
