P.U.P. Leader Takes on Foreign Minister, Wilfred Elrington

Wilfred Elrington

The media also asked Briceño for a reaction to the comments made by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, on Monday. When asked about his thoughts on Diasporans voting in the upcoming referendum, Minister Elrington said that the referendum is for Belizeans who “live in Belize and who work in Belize and who will suffer the consequences of what happens not people who live abroad and who may never come back.” Briceño says that the P.U.P. does not subscribe to Elrington’s point of view.

“I do not agree with Minister Elrington where he is basically telling people to come and lie, to come and spend two months or just come and say you spent two months here and then you go and register and then you can vote. Because then what would happen after that is that  then when elections time comes  the people who have the most money can pay plane tickets for those people to come and vote on an elections. We do not subscribe to that. It is easier to discuss or to see if it is possible to then allow to have the Diaspora to be registered abroad and then for this referendum to give them an opportunity to be able to vote whether they believe we should go to the I.C.J. or not.”
