Shake Up in the Belize Police Department

There are multiple reports of a big shakeup within the administration of the Belize Police Department. The reported changes come on the heels of the appointment of new Commissioner of Police Chester Williams who officially took office on Wednesday of this week. Since taking up the new role, News Five understands that Williams has already put some of the reshuffling is already into motion. A document circulating on Facebook outlines some of the major changes taking place under Williams’ leadership. According to the list in circulation, Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett is south side commander no more. He will now be the Head of the Special Branch.  In a Facebook statement, Gillett confirmed that he has been replaced; he thanked the Belizean public for their support. He said, “The experience was a great one which will form part of my bio. If given the opportunity, I would do it again.” Gillett says he will be replaced by Superintendent Daniel Arzu. Marco Vidal, who was head of Special Branch, will now take up the post of Commander Operations. ACP Robert Mariano, Eastern Division’s Regional Commander, is assuming the Commander Administration role, replacing acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Edward Broaster, who is now the Commander of National Operations. Alden Dawson will become Officer in Charge of Eastern Division Regional, replacing Robert Mariano. Dwayne Sutherland will take over as the Commander of the Professional Standard Branch, among other changes in the admin of the Department. We reached out to ComPol Williams for comment on the document that is circulating online, but he didn’t respond to our query. The press desk of the department did issue a statement to the media to say that the list has been brought to Williams’ attention and asked that the document be disregarded. The statement goes on to say that next week the Commissioner will make an official announcement to the public of any changes within the department.
