Investigations Continue into Murder of Jaime Martinez

Jaime Martinez

Investigations continue into the murder of Jaime Martinez. The twenty-three-year-old Guatemalan national was initially tagged as John Doe when his body was fished out of the Belize River on New Year’s Day in the vicinity of Blackman Eddy Village. He had been strangled and was discovered with his hands tied behind his back. Investigators have since discovered that he left his mother’s house in Libertad, Corozal to attend an event in Buena Vista Village, Cayo. But are police any closer to solving this crime?

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“We know that he was last seen in Buena Vista Village in the Cayo District on the twenty-ninth of December sometime around eleven p.m. was the last time he was seen alive; he was at a function in Buena Vista. Upon interviewing his family members, it is said that sometime earlier in December he had left his mother’s home in Libertad to visit friends in Buena Vista and that’s the last they know of him. It is an ongoing investigation; the police are following several leads. We were just in the area yesterday and I believe the officers are back in the area today. A motive has not yet been established but we are following several leads.”
