Health Minister Comments on Corozal Baby’s Untimely Death

An investigation into the untimely death of eleven-week-old baby boy Dion Woodeye Junior is currently underway. The investigation was launched by the Ministry of Health after the baby died at the Corozal Community Hospital on December thirty-first, 2018. The child’s parents took him to the hospital after he began suffering from an extreme case of diarrhea and excessive vomiting. But according to the mother, Leah Miller, the staff at the hospital did not afford her son the emergency care he needed. Miller says that this caused Baby Dion to die of dehydration later in the day. She says that if her son was treated in a timely manner, he would be alive today. In speaking with News Five, Minister of Health, Pablo Marin, stated that ministry officials will be meeting with the hospital staff next week to address these concerns.

“It’s so sad to hear the loss of a baby. It’s sad to hear any loss at all I think the DHS mentioned that we are doing an investigation. We haven’t finished yet but definitely we will be doing a lot of changes in the hospital and not only in Corozal but all around. We need to have people accountable for their actions and that is what we are going to do.”

“Since the story aired, a lot of people have been commenting that staff, nurses, doctors but particularly nurses at the emergency section do not treat people how they are suppose to be treated, do not provide emergency care for cases in which emergency care is to be provided. Is that something the Ministry is looking into in speaking to these different hospitals?”

Pablo Marin

“Definitely, that is something we are looking at. But it is not only that; we need the people and patients to start to put it in writing for us to be able to start to investigate the cases. Not only put it on social media but once you have something in black and white and you direct that to the Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, then we can look at it in detail and see what is happening in our place. A case: they called me at my house, it was about ten in the night, and they said that the nurse does not want to attend to me and they were using their phone. I moved from my house and I went to the hospital and really the patient was outside waiting and the nurse was playing with her phone. These are the things that we are putting certain measures in the hospital. Also the way you attend to a patient; we are constantly trying to remind them that you have to treat a person the way that you want them to treat your family member. This is where we are putting out hands together and net week on Thursday we are going into the hospital with the C.E.O. and DHS to try and talk to them and show them that we are not playing with nobody.”
