Chester Williams, New Commissioner of Police

Chester Williams

Within minutes of a press conference hosted by Chester Williams, a brief release was issued confirming that Williams is moving up as Commissioner of Police beginning this Wednesday. Allen Whylie is vacating the post to proceed on retirement after almost six years as ComPol. Williams is a career police officer and an attorney. He has tremendous experience in patrolling, investigative practices, operations as well as community policing. Williams is also a staunch defender of the state of emergency imposed in September, 2018 amid reports of human rights violation of persons incarcerated without charges. He is taking over a department tainted by allegations of corruption from within. This due to recent cases of cops, senior and otherwise, linked to drug planes. Then there is crippling crime, 2018 being one of the most murderous years and 2019 started no better. These are only some of the challenges that the new top cop will face as he assumes the helm of the department.  Just prior to the announcement this is what the new ComPol had to say.

Chester Williams, Acting ComPol

“You are giving me news. I cannot say that. I’m still the Deputy Commissioner of Police if you see the rank on my shoulder. So as it relates to being the Commissioner of Police, I don’t know. If and when I get that call, then I can say yes.”

Duane Moody

“Would you accept sir?”

Chester Williams

“Of course, it is the dream of any police officer to rise up to the top and become the commissioner of police and so if it is offered to me, I am surely going to accept and will ensure that I do my best in that capacity.”

Duane Moody

“Would you say that the work that you’ve done both in Belize City when you were there as commander as well as in your current role as Deputy Commissioner of Police for Operations where we have seen that there has been somewhat of a change in the way how policing and not condoning these rogue actions from cops….Do you think that this has solidified your move up there?”

Chester Williams

“Well that would be a question to be answered by whoever would make the request or the announcement in terms of making me commissioner. I cannot blow my own whistle, but I can tell you that I am a person who whenever I do something, I try to do it to the best of my ability. I do not believe in short-changing myself or what I do so I will always try to excel at whatever I am tasked to do in life.”
