U.S. Issued Level 2 Travel Advisory for Belize

The start of 2019 was a bloody one, with a shocking five homicides. Uncle Sam has taken note and on Friday, the U.S. Department of State issued a level two travel advisory for Americans who are considering visiting Belize. The travel advisory is due to the increase in crime and it recommends its citizens to exercise extreme caution when in Belize. The advisory speaks of violent crimes such as sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murders. It says that these types of crimes have become common even during daylight hours and in tourist areas. U.S. citizens are also told to exercise caution while traveling to the south side of Belize City because a significant portion of violent crime is gang-related. It notes that local law enforcement officers lack the resources and training to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents with most crimes remaining unresolved and unprosecuted. U.S. Citizens are also advised to beware of their surroundings, avoid walking or driving at night, and be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs if they do decide to travel to Belize. They are also told to not display signs of wealth.
