Window of Opportunity for P.U.C. Objections Quickly Closing

The period for objections to be submitted to the Public Utilities Commission, in respect of an increase in electricity rates which came into effect on January first, expires on Saturday. When the hike was announced, government opposed the increase which was more than what B.E.L. requested.  G.O.B. issued a release last Friday asking the P.U.C. to reconsider its decision and approve the increase at forty-one point five cents and not forty-two cents per kilowatt hour.  Today, Director of Electricity Ambrose Tillett told News Five that he is not aware that government has tendered a written objection and that Chairman John Avery is currently out of the country.  So does it mean that government has since recanted its position?

“The period for objections and for comments ends on Saturday.  It’s a ten-day window and that window ends on Saturday.  Thereafter, the commission has five days to review those comments and objections, to respond to them and to make a final decision.  There is the opportunity for persons who are impacted or affected by this decision to have an input before the decision is finalized by the commission.  I have read the government’s press release.  We have not received the written objections from the government as yet.  It is possible that the government communicated directly to the chairman of our commission rather than through the normal channels that the public or interested parties tend to use.  And licensees do that, not only the government, licensees tend to directly communicate with the chairman, so the government and the minister of course do.  But generally the public and interested parties would use our normal channels to file objections and comments.  That was not used so it’s possible that they have used the channel of chairman and the chairman will not be available until Monday.”
