BPM Sounds Off on the I.C.J. Campaign’s Billboards

And another matter that the Belize Peace Movement weighed in on today was the use of monies for a campaign that they say is for a “YES” vote.  The BPM’s contention with the approach being used by G.O.B. is that the monies should be used to present both sides of the dispute. And so their contention is with the use of local personalities on “YES-vote” billboards which they say is sending the wrong message. Bobby Lopez explains why they have an issue with this latest tactic.

“The Peace Movement is alerted by the many celebrity endorsed billboards with subtle promote a yes vote in the upcoming referendum and recognizing that there exists a real relationship of influence, trust and confidence between the features celebrities and the thousands of Belizeans who remain innocently uninformed about the upcoming referendum. And knowing that the featured celebrities are not themselves creating, financing or erecting these billboards, the Peace Movement views this billboard strategy as a criminal act of undue influence upon thousands of innocent and yet uninformed Belizeans. The Peace Movement therefore challenges these funders of these billboards to provide equitable funds for the creation and erection of public signs which will give balance to the undue influence or take down the billboards for the sake of equity and fairness. The Peace Movement further challenges these celebrities to demand the removal of their precious images from these billboards as these signs constitute a crime of undue influence upon the people of Belize. Celebrity carries a social responsibility; neglect of one’s responsibilities carries  serious consequences.”
