Crime Prevention Following Joseph Babb Execution

In order to thwart another wave of gun violence in the wake of Babb’s murder, the police department has rounded up a group of young men who are considered affiliates of the Backalands gang and has placed them on preventative detention.  It is one of several measures being taken to address the recent spike of shootings in the Old Capital.

Chester Williams, Acting ComPol

“Following the aftermath of the murder of Joseph Babb, I met with my senior command team and we have put in place several mechanisms to ensure that we avert any possible retaliation.  We know that whenever we have any gang-related murders there is always a chain of murders that follow thereafter.  It is our hope that the efforts that have been put in place will prevent that from occurring, but I would also like to appeal to the general public to work with us and to bear a little patience with us in the strategies that we will be employing to ensure your personal safety.”

“In the wake of this shooting, I understand that several young men have been detained.  Perhaps this is a preventative method to stem any kind of retaliation.  Are you aware of this?”

Dianne Finnegan, Family Friend

“Yes, and this is something that we’ve been doing, we were doing, from when Chester, myself and Nuri were doing the interventions.  It’s just preventative measures, as you said.  These guys, someone very, very closely connected, knitted in their souls has been ripped apart.  It’s going to create a reaction and when you’re confused, when you are hurting, when you are mourning, often times you don’t have time to stop and think.”

“It is not a matter that the police can solve alone.  As the prime minister has said in his New Year’s message, the fighting of crime spans beyond the police and it must incorporate the collaboration of other government agencies, as well as other social partners and so it is our intention to be able to collaborate with those social partners to find some lasting solutions to fight of crime, particularly to south side Belize City.”

So, brilliant Chester. If they are gang affiliates, then charge them. Since when is it legal to identify as a gang member in Belize?
