Young Mother of 3 Fatally Stabbed by Ex-Common-Law Husband

One of the persons to be killed during the bloodbath on the first day of the New Year was a young mother of three. Anita Pineda was reportedly stabbed by her ex-common-law husband while she was in the company of her mother at a house of her former brother-in-law in San Ignacio. Pineda’s ex-common-law husband arrived on Tuesday night, demanding that Pineda leave with him on his motorcycle. She refused and an argument ensued resulting in the fatal stabbing of Pineda. News Five’s Hipolito Novelo reports.

“The life of thirty-three-year old Anita Pineda was the first to be claimed by domestic violence for the New Year. The mother of three children was at this residence behind me when she was fatally stabbed on New Year’s night by her ex-common law husband who the family described as abusive, controlling and jealous.”

“The common-law-husband is Ruben Cassasola. He is in police custody and police should be laying charged against that individual, hopefully before the end of the day today.”

The person behind that smile is Anita Pineda and the man beside her, with his hands tightly around her waist, is Ruben Cassasola. He is the common-law husband accused of fatally stabbing Pineda in the chest. Pineda and her mother were at this house, the residence of Cassasola’s brother, when Cassasola appeared. He was angry, demanding and had a folding knife in his pocket.

“The man arrived. He grabbed her by the hair. He wanted for them to get on the motorcycle. He was making claims and asking her where she was on the night of the thirty-first. And Noel says that he saw him searching his pockets. He wanted to murder, I think, the mother, my wife. But my daughter intervened to defend her. He took out the knife and cut her. But he still spoke to her, asking her to take care of his children.”

Cassasola escaped on a motorcycle, later to be caught by police. Pineda’s mother quickly rushed her to the hospital. She was losing a lot of blood. She was pronounced dead on arrival. Her mother later delivered the terrible news to the family.

“When my mother came, she frightened me because her clothes were covered with blood.  I stared at her and I asked, ‘what happened to you?’ She couldn’t speak. She left the three children at the house with me. I asked, ‘what happened to you?’ Anita was killed she said.”

By all accounts, Cassasola was an abusive husband. They lived in this small, zinc structure a few yards away from her parents. Her sister says that Cassasola would hit Pineda more times than one could count- beat her badly and lock her up inside.

Rosa Mejia

“He was very jealous. He has another women but he was very jealous. He did not allow her to go out anywhere. He didn’t allow her- for nothing. She had to stay indoors.”

“He used to beat her?”

Rosa Mejia

“Oh God! He used to leave her black and blued. He used to hit her really hard. She suffered a lot. She was suffering.”

…suffering for years. Her hope in him was restored after the birth of their only male child. Cassasola’s abusive attitude lessened but not for long. It was too good to be true for Pineda. Cassasola would abuse her in front of their three children.

Rosa Mejia

“When she had the boy, we saw a change. He was a man- but as the boy grew older, she saw that he was nothing good. He went back to being the same, drinking. He drinks a lot. That is his problem.”

Hipolito Novelo

“He used to beat her in front of the children?”

Rosa Mejia

“Yes. There at her little house. The eldest daughter- she has the same age as my daughter- used to come out, run and say “Grandmother, my father is beating my mother.”

Pineda’s father intervened once but Cassasola attacked him, breaking two of his ribs.

Jose Manuel Pineda

“That man…my daughter was never happy with him. Because one time he arrived at the house and he beat me. I fell and he beat me. He broke two of my ribs. The police took me to the hospital. The last time, he then went to challenge me at the church. He grabbed rocks. I grabbed my phone and called the police. The police went to look for him the other day but they did not find him.”

Police later found him. The officers instructed him to leave. That was about four months ago and during that time that they were separated, Cassasola would, according to the father, stalk Pineda until he came face to face with her for the last time on New Year’s night.

Jose Manuel Pineda

“I expected this because she was never happy with him. She was never happy.”
