Reorganization of Police Department is Coming in 2019

George Lovell

In the wake of the record number of killings in a span of twenty-four hours, Chief Executive Officer George Lovell, of the Ministry of National Security, has outlined a strategy that will be employed during the reorganization process.

(Ret.) Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security

“In terms of police professionalization, we have looked at the police academy in particular and some of the issues that we certainly need to address.  One of the first things that we need to look at is that of our recruitment policy that we have and there are a number of things that we will be doing in terms of aptitude tests and some other tests that we intend to do to ensure that we get the right people to be able to serve us.  We’re also looking at field training for field officers countrywide that we will be putting in place.  I have mentioned earlier that the Com Stat is one of the things that we certainly need to use as a tool.  I have seen it used in Chile and I am quite certain that we can also use that here in Belize.  We are looking at our investigation capacity to enhance that and to do so we will have to ensure that we get in professional trainers.  We have been partnering again with the U.S. government through the INL/State Department initiatives and I have been talking to a number of key people who, regionally, are responsible for these types of training and I am optimistic that they will bring a cadre of trainers here to ensure that are trained.”
