National Security C.E.O. Rebuts Criticism of Police Crime Fighting Strategy

George Lovell

Over the past few years, the Ministry of National Security and the Belize Police Department have attempted a number of strategies to arrest crime and violence in Belize City.  2018 goes down on record as the second most murderous year in the history of the country, with just a few less homicides than 2012.  But, have all the efforts of government to mitigate the endless spate of gun violence been for nothing?  Today, C.E.O. Lovell rebutted that criticism.

(Ret.) Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security

“All that the police have done since 2017, in terms of the efforts that they have had in the streets of Belize have brought us the kind of calm that otherwise we may not have experienced and so it’s not for naught.  You can’t really put a cost to the kind of efforts that we put for safety and security in this country and if it is that the government and people have to invest a little bit more to make us safer, then that is what we will have to do.  That is the cost that we may have to pay for this.  But I also want to say too that we are looking at these things and we are looking at ways how we can do better with the kind of investments that we are making.”
