Here is an uplifting story. A twenty-eight-year-old first-time mother welcomed her bundle of joy as the first baby to be born in Belize at the start of 2019. Clarissa Williams birthed baby Jayelle at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The healthy baby girl weighed six pounds four ounces. Duane Moody has the following report.

Meet Baby Jayelle—she is the firstborn of twenty-eight-year-old Belize City resident Clarissa Williams. But with taking her first breath around twelve-forty-five a.m. on Tuesday, Baby Jayelle is also special because at six pounds four ounces, she is also the first born for the New Year. Williams was hospitalized on December thirty-first, two weeks shy of her due date. Overwhelmed with mixed emotions, she says that she is grateful for her baby girl.

The pain start, the nurse dehn check me over and over and dehn say yo noh ready. Mi ma mi come with me and I say ma how dehn wah say I noh ready, and I ina so much pain. I can’t take this pain; I literally di bawl down this hospital dah night. The nurse say you wah have the New Year’s baby by the time this clock strike twelve, you wah have ten centimetres; and just like that it happen, when the clock strike twelve, I reach the ten centimetres and they ker me into the delivery room. It was a hard delivery, but I am so thankful that I have my baby girl with me.”

In celebration of the New Year’s Day baby, several companies came out to assist Williams in taking care of Jayelle. The packages contain supplies for both the Williams and her daughter to stay healthy during the first month.

A total of five babies were born at the K.H.M.H. on January first; the second was around seven-thirteen born to Azucena Caal from Bermudian Landing, in the Belize District.  As they have done for some years now, SanCas will also provide packages to those mothers at the K.H.M.H. as well as the mothers of the first born from each municipality.

“The baby that was born for the new year in each of the districts  and we include also San Pedro and Belmopan, they receive a package from us which includes Huggies. Huggies diapers, wipes, Ovaltine which is good for breastfeeding—we support K.H.M.H.’s strategy in keeping breastfeeding first. So we give the mom Ovaltine, we do not include any infant formula or cereal. The first overall baby was born here at the K.H.M.H. and she is receiving a month supply of diapers and wipes on behalf of San Cas and Huggies.”
