A Christmas Party for the Mentally Ill

This morning, Welcome Resource Center held its annual Christmas party for its many guests.  The partygoers included the homeless, the mentally ill, as well as the elderly.  This year, the center is going an extra mile and will be treating its clients to a full meal on Christmas Day, including the traditional turkey dinner.  Today, News Five caught the attendees in the mix of all the fun-filled activities.

Joyce Ellis, Administrator, Welcome Resource Center

“This Christmas party is specifically for the population that we serve, mentally ill, homeless, elderly, a few deportees and just a few people who have been going through some tough times during this time.  The party is annual.  The special highlight that really appeals for me this year, because we are doing some food hampers, these are foods that don’t need to be cooked, that they would have a meal or something to prepare themselves throughout this time.  The thing is that over the years, my five years of being here, after we go off on our Christmas vacation we don’t know what they eat during that time, although the staff itself would take food downtown to just give them that meal.  But we want them to be able, if we can’t see them, they have something to eat.  This year, each person would walk away with three different items, a gift bag, their party bag, personal items, they have the traditional turkey dinner and cake from scratch; the Christmas cake.”
