150 Guat Families Living within the Adjacency Zone

Edgar Felipe Aguilar Chan

There are currently one hundred and fifty Guatemalan families living within the adjacency zone in the west. Many may not know, but Guatemala has a consular office in Benque Viejo del Carmen.  Edgar Felipe Aguilar Chan is the Consul General. His role is primarily to assist Guatemalan nationals and to foster relations among communities along the border. In an interview with the media today, we asked the Consul General about the scope of his work and population he serves in the area.

“We have supported the cooperation between Benque and Melchor de Mencos, regarding the issue of the environment. For example, we have protected the Mayan Biosphere Reserve in the north, close to where the Mennonites grow their corn and beans; where there have been incidents of fires spreading to our mountains. Another issue is that of Belize’s Chiquibul Forest Reserve on one side of the adjacency zone and the fourteen Guatemalan communities on the other side.”

“What is the population of those communities?”

Edgar Felipe Aguilar Chan

“We are looking at about one hundred and fifty families per community.”
