Guatemalans Make Up 5% of Belize’s Population
Thousands of Guatemalans are known to reside in Belize; and most of them have acquired citizenship. Today, we also took the opportunity to ask the Consul General about the population of Guatemalans living in Belize. While he admits that any numbers they have on record would be less than the actual population, he did provide an estimate.
Edgar Felipe Aguilar Chan, Guatemalan Consul General, Benque Viejo Del Carmen [Translated]
“We have a vague estimate of the number of Guatemalans living in Belize. We do not have specific numbers since every day people come and go. We do not have concrete statistics.”

“About how many Guatemalan people live here? More or less?”
Edgar Felipe Aguilar Chan
“We have approximately one thousand five hundred Guatemalan persons living in Benque Veijo and San Ignacio. And in the rest of the country, we have about two thousand Guatemalans living in Dangriga. We have about five percent of the population of Belize.”
