New Developments in the Vanishing of Annie Young

Anisha Young

Despite the offer of a hefty reward on information of her whereabouts, Anisha Young remains missing. Her family has now turned to Jose Luis Espat, who has previously assisted families in similar circumstances. The twenty-three-year-old has been missing for more than a week after leaving a nightclub in a taxi along with her boyfriend. While the race is against time, Espat and Young’s family believe that the boyfriend is not being entirely truthful.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

There are more questions than answers in the strange disappearance of Anisha Young, who has been missing since the morning of December ninth.  The twenty-three-year-old employee of Voyse International was last seen during the predawn hours that Sunday, as she was leaving from a staff event in a taxicab on Newtown Barracks.  Annie’s family has been searching intensely, combing everywhere they believe her body would have been disposed of.  But they are stumped and have now turned to Jose Luis Espat for assistance in trying to recover her remains.

“The very, very most important part when a missing person is reported is the first forty-eight hours and when they go missing, remember that twenty-four hours after it is reported is when police start to take or should start to take action, is because within forty-eight hours if that person is still alive, you know, that’s when chances are high to find them alive.  After that the chances of finding them alive is very slim.”

In the case of Annie’s disappearance, it has been nine days since she was last seen or heard from.  Her boyfriend was detained and subsequently released, despite her family’s belief that he may know more than he is telling investigators.  Deputy Commissioner Chester Williams addressed the media on Monday.

“We are hoping that she is still alive somewhere.  So we are expecting the worse, but at the end of the day we are still hoping for the best.  I would want to appeal to any member of the public who may have information that they believe could assist the police, as well as the family members of Ms. Young to bring closure to this unfortunate situation.”

It’s an urgent request also being made by Annie’s relatives.  Fully aware that they are racing against time, her family, through Espat, is seeking public assistance in locating her body.

“More than likely Ms. Young has passed.  At this point I can’t give much details of what we have investigated so far because it would jeopardize finding her.  So I can say that I have two possible motive that I am looking at and I cannot share that yet as well.  There’s a lot of rumors going around but I have two specific motives.  This case is very, very delicate and my thing here is not to investigate who is the murderer or to send anybody to jail, that’s the police’s job.  My thing here is to help a family, a grieving family who reflects a grieving country because this family is not the first, as you all know.”

The police department has pledged its assistance, despite public criticism from Young’s family that much hasn’t been done to uncover the mystery of her disappearance.

Chester Williams

“Our efforts will continue this week.  Whatever information we may receive will be followed and I will task Mr. Cowo after this conference is over to work more closely with the family because I know that they have had complaints in the past.”

On Monday afternoon, as promised, DCP Williams and Assistant Superintendent Alejandro Cowo, who heads the CIB team in Belize City, met with the family.

Jose Luis Espat

“There was very little that the police department is offering.  How sincere they are being, I am not sure, you know.  But all they have promised is that whenever I am ready to give the go ahead they would have a team of GSU, special unit, tactical unit, the K9 unit, the coastguard, basically offering us their resources, you know.  But in terms of the investigation, I am not saying that they haven’t done absolutely nothing, but the most part and the most crucial part has been done by the family and myself.”

Notwithstanding those efforts, the puzzle that is Annie’s disappearance is yet to be solved. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
