Shootout between Police and Armed Robber

On Tuesday around two p.m., a Belizean truck driver from Orange Walk was shot inside a water truck he was driving in the Gungulung area of Belize City. Two men approached and shot him in the leg before escaping with a fanny pack containing an undisclosed amount of money. Police in the area set chase after the thieves who were on a motorcycle, rode off towards the Raccoon Street Extension area. A video on social media shows a crossfire between responding officers and the armed thief, before he was detained. That person has since been identified as Jeremy Muslar of a Belize City address. Muslar will be charged for robbery and for aggravated assault against the truck driver and the police officers. Assistant Superintendent of Police Alejandro Cowo commented on the incident and the use of force by the officers.

“While inside the truck, he was approached by two male persons on board of a black in colour motorcycle. One of the male persons was armed with a firearm and went directly to him, opened the door of the truck and began hitting him with the firearm on his head and thereafter fired three shots at him, injuring him on the left leg. He was rushed to the hospital, treated and discharged the same afternoon from the hospital. At the time, stolen from him was a small fanny bag which contained a small, undisclosed amount of cash. Police in the area were alerted and set chase on these two male persons who were on board the motorcycle. They end up catching one of them at Raccoon Street Extension behind some bushes. Also in the immediate area, police found the same bag that was stolen from the truck driver, Mister Triminos. I saw the video and the area where the police were shooting…yes the surroundings is a residential area, but the actual firing was inside the bushes; they were no house in the immediate area. And the amount of shots that were fired, I can tell you…if somebody fired a shot at me and I had an M-sixteen, I will empty the entire magazine, but that is me. I cannot tell you how many shots were fired or not; that is depending on everybody.”

“So in other words, the police used their discretion?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Yes, once your life is in danger and you have a firearm, you have the right to defend yourself.”
