Said Musa Pans Vital Stats Unit

The Vital Statistics Unit remains under intense public scrutiny, following the termination of four employees last week who were found to have aided in the falsification of a birth certificate for alleged murderer William ‘Danny’ Mason.  Notwithstanding that black-eye, the office which falls under the Attorney General’s ministry faces harsh criticism from the opposition.  Today in the House of Representatives, former Prime Minister Said Musa spoke of the many wrongs at the unit where even rodents are eating documents as thousands head to the unit because of the ongoing re-registration.

Said Musa, Area Representative, Fort George

“What I perceive is happening in the Vital Statistics Department poses a serious threat to our democratic system of governance and as you a fundamental issue when it comes to our governance and democracy is the right to have the ability to vote in free and fair elections.  Now, the prime minister is on record as saying not so long ago, describing the Lands Department, the Ministry of Lands or Natural Resources as it was, as a hotbed of corruption.  And I would invite him to take, it’s not too late Mr. Prime Minister, a closer look at what has been happening at the Vital Statistics Department.  He will find not only an old, dilapidated system in place and just moving from one building to another, albeit well refurbished and everything else, will just not cut it because it’s the system, it’s the system that we are dealing with here of records of births and deaths with pages missing from the records, with pages eaten up by rodents and insects and records missing.  Some records that are found [contain] many misspelled names.  People don’t even recognize their birth certificates.  They always knew they had this particular name but when they get their birth certificate it’s an entirely different name.”
