An Update on Proposed Diaspora Bill

Kareem Musa

Caribbean Shores Area Rep Kareem Musa has been busy drafting a piece of legislation that if passed will see Diaspora Belizeans participating in the April 2019 I.C.J. referendum.  He was unable to introduce the bill in the House today since the motion would have to be tabled during an ordinary sitting of the house, but he lodged it on Monday.  Musa provided an update on discussions held with PM Barrow.  Without going into details, the PM also touched on the proposal briefly.

Kareem Musa, Area Representative, Caribbean Shores

“I just wanted to give an update, Madame Speaker, that it will be presented at the next ordinary sitting of the house as directed by your ladyship.  In addition to that, Madame Speaker, a bit of good news on that point.  I had the opportunity to consult with the prime minister in chambers in the back.  I think it’s the season prime minister, or maybe it’s the shirt, I think it’s none of the two, but I think the prime minister genuinely recognizes the importance of not having Belizeans, of the fact that no Belizean, Madame Speaker, no matter where in the world they live should feel disenfranchised or should feel deprived of the right to have a voice on this very important ICJ referendum that’s coming up in April.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Without getting into the members bills and the actual contents, maybe I can just set out some general principles that our side would be able to live with.  There is no difficulty, as I understand members on this side of the house, with allowing Belizeans who have some kind of family address in this country, to register so that they might be able to vote in the referendum.  Now the question as to whether such a thing finds favor with the majority of Belizeans living at home is another one.  I suspect if we were to have any chance of knowing or gauging that sort of sentiment, we’d have to have a second referendum on that.”
