FinSec Says G.O.B. Not Repaying David Gegg

Joseph Waight

In late November the House of Representatives passed an amendment to the General Sales Tax Act which would basically close a loophole. The amendment came after the Caribbean Court of Justice ordered the Government to repay businessman David Gegg more than half a million dollars after Gegg’s attorney successfully argued that Cruise Solutions Limited and Discovery Expeditions Limited, companies owned by Gegg, are not legally obligated to pay G.S.T. as it pertains to the tour operator services provided, The amendment block local tour operators, who have paid their taxes, from collecting and it is retroactive which means that G.O.B. will not be repaying Gegg. It is uncertain whether or not Gegg will make legal moves to still have his monies returned as ordered by the C.C.J., but according to the Financial Secretary, Joseph Waight, it is his hope that the matter is concluded.

“But Sir that is a court judgment before the law was passed.”

Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary

“But the amendment made it retroactive.”

“Sir aren’t you afraid that the government can be held on contempt of court or…?”

Joseph Waight

“That will work its way through. I am not sure what the next step will be. I am not sure this is the end of the matter. I hope it is. We’ll see.”
