Leader of Opposition sounds off on “Christmas Cheer”

John Briceño

Government will be disbursing six-hundred-and-fifty-thousand dollars for its annual Christmas cheer programme. At the last sitting of the House, Prime Minister Dean Barrow made no apologies about the distribution of the monies, which will see ministers receive twenty-five-thousand dollars and elected members of the Opposition will get half of that amount. That decision didn’t go over well with P.U.P. leader John Briceño who disagrees with the unequal distribution. He also questions the use of so much funds during ‘hard times.’

John Briceño, Leader of Opposition

“This reminds me about Animal Farm, where we are all equal but some are more equal than others and this is exactly what the Prime Minister is telling the Belizean people. Because you belong to the party in Government, you suppose to get more when actually you are supposed to get less because you have more access to resources. But that aside, I think it is a bad precedent this government is setting. Remember they are using tax payers dollars just to give away. We need to be very, very careful about that. I mean, we have so many needs in this country and we need to manage those resources as best as we can.”

Briceño says that the elected members of the Opposition have not yet discussed how the monies will be used in their constituencies.
