E-governance Takes on the Transport Department

Remus Li-Kuo Chen

As it stands, the Department of Transport and the nine cities and towns across the country all work independently of each other.  They also operate on separate electronic databases and manual systems which end up in poorly organized and inaccessible record management and data sharing.  The Belize Motor Vehicle Registration and License System is a new digital platform designed to tackle the decentralized transport mechanism in Belize.  It seeks to digitalize and reform the transport process and services and initiate a necessary audit system.

Remus Li-Kuo Chen, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize

“This project is a four-year joint partnership of Taiwan and Belize for e-governance, with a budget of two point eight million U.S. dollars.  The great deliverables are providing the timesaving, efficient and less costly e-government services in transport for Belizean citizens.  In the first phase of this project we have successfully established the Motor Vehicle Service Platform which is a centralized database that will facilitate the storage, integration and sharing of transport data and also will assist the overall development and improvement of transport services.  Upon the abovementioned system, the Department of Transports offices in Belize City, Belmopan, Santa Elena and Orange Walk have collectively issued more than two thousand new drivers licenses, not in the form of papers but cards.  The good news is that the rest of the municipalities will be providing the same services soon.  So on behalf of my government and the people of Taiwan, I would like to reiterate our strong support for the digital e-government crusade initiated by Prime Minister Barrow and of course led by your very wonderful mastermind, Mr. Singh.”
