HelpAge International Latin America and Caribbean Sub-Regional Conference

For the first time, the HelpAge International Latin America and Caribbean Sub-Regional conference is being hosted in Belize. The meeting brought together experts from across both regions to discuss the Inter-American Convention in the region on the Older Persons Rights in El Salvador and Costa Rica taking into consideration the experience and the role of civil society. The three-day conference started today at the Ramada Belize City Princess and Patroness of HelpAge Belize, Maria Elena Sylvestre says that much more needs to be done for this vulnerable population.

“We should be a bridge between these two very diverse languages, because really Belize, more than fifty percent now is bilingual. So if there is anything that Belize could do for the older persons is to provide this networking between our neighbours in Central America and Latin America and the Caribbean. And what we are discussing today is how we will implement the many agreements, conventions through the years that have been passed by the United Nations, by the global organizations. But when it comes down to the implementation, it has never happened. Older people are still being marginalized.  We have deadlines and there is a deadline coming up in 2025/2030 when all these countries have to present what they have done and what they have not done to help the conditions of our older citizens. And so there is a sense of urgency I think and I think there is a recognition of the contribution of HelpAge Belize. Our regional coordinator, Miss Bustamante just said that Belize is recognized as one of the champions in the work for older persons. So it is something to be proud of that we today are hosting this regional conference.”
