Xin Ni Uses Bogus Corozal Address to Purchase Hilltop

Xin Ni

The sensational story involving the questionable sale of choice land between the Belmopan City Council and Chinese businessman Xin Ni continues to unravel.  Tonight, the plot thickened because the Vice President of the Corozal Branch of the Public Service Union has come forward to say that the mailing address used in the dubious transaction is his residence in Santa Rita.  The Belmopan property in question, known as Hilltop, houses the P.S.U. headquarters and has been occupied and managed by the union since 1998.  When it was quietly sold by City Hall on October tenth to Simplex Design Company, the registered address provided by the businessman was number thirty-eight Santa Rita Layout.  As it turns out, that is where Amelio Cal and his family have been residing since childhood. On Facebook this morning, Cal posted that the property belongs to his mother, Clivia Lizarraga and that at no time did an Asian national reside at that address.  Cal is the Vice President of the P.S.U.’s local branch in the Corozal District and told News Five today that he has never met Xin Ni and openly questions why his address would be used by the businessman to complete the sale of property occupied by the parent union.

On the Phone: Amelio Cal, Vice President, Corozal Branch, P.S.U.

“38 Santa Rita Layout, the property owner is my mom, Lydia Lizarraga; I lived here with my mom from when the house was constructed in 2000.  We have always known this to be 38 Santa Rita Layout.  Yes, basically my concern is security-wise, that’s why I came out publicly with it, because, as I have mentioned before, I live here with my mom and my wife and my kids and I wouldn’t really want anybody to come knocking at my door believing any rich Asian lives at this residence.  I am a Justice of the Peace; I am also Vice Chair of Corozal Branch of the Public Service Union.”

“Were you in any way, considering the fact that you are the vice chairman of the Public Service Union in Corozal; were you at any point aware of this transaction?  Are you familiar with the gentleman involved, Mr. Xin Ni?  Anything that sort?”

On the Phone: Amelio Cal

“No, none at all.  None, none at all.  When I first got to know of the transaction was when it was posted by our union.  I wasn’t aware.  As far as I am concerned, what I was aware of was yes, our union was in negotiation in purchasing it, that land.  And I don’t even know this Asian gentleman.  Actually I would want to meet him to ask him why and when did he use my address.”
