Mayor Wagner Says City Council Spending Way Less

Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner announced today that the council has been able to collect significantly more income due to the council’s efficiency in revenue collection, hard stance against political ‘hand outs’ and the determination to meet all bills on time. The Belize City Council hosted the media this morning to present its first eight-month financial report. The mayor also explained that the council has also been able to reduce expenditure. According to Wagner, specific social programmes had to be discontinued because the city’s monies were going to waste. Wagner says that social programmes such as concerts, which cost thousands of dollars, have been removed.

“One of the big social programs obviously is the big concerts which were held every quarter I believe.  A hundred and thirty thousand on a concert for one night, that is irresponsible, total irresponsible.”

Oscar Arnold, Deputy Mayor, Belize City

“We found it very difficult to put an event like that in the social program category. We are revamping and we are looking at restarting the pantry program as well where they will only select few people that were enjoying that pantry program and we want it to be a little more far reaching, having more penetration within the area that really need it and to residents who really need that services because when you have a social program and you don’t h it the people who are marginal or at the bottom, in my view, you can’t say that that is a social program because all you are doing is gifting to party hats and people who are loyal to you party.”

“Maintenance, you mentioned that that was brought down. A question arises as to ensuring that everything that needs to be maintained is being maintained. Why is it that that went down?

Bernard Wagner

“A lot of those maintenance were wastage actually, I believe because we have been doing maintenance. As people call us, we have been maintenance. I think that in that figure for 2017 was a lot of skullduggery and I would say corruption happening there. We have worked hard to make sure to weed out that type of activity.”
