Southside Belize City to get Ring Road Community Park

In the north side of Belize City, there are the B.T.L. and Memorial Parks, two social recreation areas enjoyed by city residents mainly of the surrounding areas. The Belize City Council unveiled plans today to construct a Southside equivalent, the Ring Road Community Park. The park will be built in the Lake Independence Area near the Ring Road and it is expected to be equipped with a public stage, barbecuing area, and several booths. Mayor Bernard Wagner explains:

“If you had been in this area some months ago, this area was forgotten, dilapidated area. Many councils have attempted to undertake this part. We felt that it was important for the residents of this area that they have a facility or an area that they can call their home. Many of these people traverse to BTL Park on the north side to find recreation. Having a park such as this in the immediate area will certainly help their quality of life. It is a park that is equitable to the area and the residents and I feel that the mere fact that we as a council heard their cries and we said that we need to step on this, we need to ensure that the residents have something that they can call on their own. You can see from here that we have food kiosks areas. We have a stage because we want the people, the residents of the area have their little variety shows, Christmas programs. We have a barbecue area, sitting area. You notice that we also there is a lot of green. We wanted to ensure that there is a level of greenery in the area. Overall, we will have barbecue stands where people on a Sunday afternoon could come out and do their barbecue, bring their family out. A real oriented family park. What will happen here is that this area will become gentrified. We will ensure that lights, we will have the proper WIFI in the area and we’ll have our park ranger in the area to ensure security as well.”

The park is in its concept stage as yet. A timeline and cost for the construction have not been established.
