Pen Cayetano: Master Artist

The Embassy of Mexico is honouring Belizean master artist Pen Cayetano with an exhibit which opened tonight for viewing at the Mexican Institute of Culture in Belize City. The exhibit will feature more than thirty artworks of Cayetano who at age sixty-five has been painting for almost five decades. He is a self-taught painter and musician and his works portray scenes of everyday life in Belize, its folklore, history and Garifuna culture.

Pen Cayetano, Artist

“My career start off when I was six to seven years old. I started with the painting, the drawing, first I started to draw. Then when I was fourteen years old, I started to paint. After those years of painting then comes work. I used to reap oranges, pack bananas and then go to cut cane. Those are my works. The work that really gets to me when I started to paint for real is when I work with sugar cane. I said that this work is very hard, cut some cane and pack it in truck and right there I stopped working and then I started to paint my life.”

“What would you want viewers take away from these paintings?”

Pen Cayetano

“These viewers can see my subjects, they can see my techniques. There is so much to see off my paintings because all my life I have been a painter. My life is a painter. Everything for me is painting. My exhibition is all about for some people to buy some of my paintings.”
