P.U.P. Licks Out at Belmopan Mayor Over Questionable Land Sale

The People’s United Party has weighed in on the land dispute involving the Belmopan City Council and the Public Service Union.  In a release issued earlier today, the opposition party castigated Mayor Khalid Belisle for selling the Hilltop property which has been occupied by the P.S.U. for the past twenty years.  The sale of land which was finalized at four hundred thousand dollars is well below the commercial market value of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars, a transaction which the P.U.P. says reeks of misfeasance.  Simplex Design Company Limited is registered to businessman Xin Ni of Santa Rita Layout, Corozal Town.  The business was incorporated a day prior to the transaction being consummated.  Here’s how Mayor Belisle explained that move.

“This business group from up north decided that as opposed to continuing this new project that they plan to, propose to embark on under their previous umbrella, they wanted something fresh and new so that it could be kind of separate and aside from their other interests and that’s my understanding of why it was that the new company was created.  In terms of the, I do take a bit of umbrage with your assertion that the transaction was completed in one day.  You make it sound like everything sailed through Lands in one day and that is not the case.  That is not the case sir, so I just want to point that out, you know. We have never had a valuation come in for a million dollars on that property, not our in-house valuation and not by a private valuator.  At no point in time has any entity, individual or company offered the Belmopan City Council a million dollars for that or any other property that I am aware of, particularly referring to my term of office here.  Four hundred thousand dollars was the offer and four hundred thousand dollars was what we accepted.  I understand where they are trying to go with that and I can even understand why it might be that they are trying to go that route, but absolutely nothing of the sort occurred.  Starting in 2001, as you can see on the Land Register Report, there’s only one entry.  There’s only one entry and it’s in the name of the Belmopan City Council.  This property has never been the property of any other entity other than the Belmopan City Council.”
